This theme focuses on how to improve life for those living in cities today, and how to reduce the impact they have on the areas around them.
Projects
SAFERUP!
SAFERUP! aims to provide the European community with innovative solutions that will form the urban paved environment of the future. Footpaths, bike lanes, roads, intersections, squares and all other walkable surfaces that we all use every day will be designed, constructed and managed to meet context-sensitive criteria including not only safety, mobility and costs (construction and maintenance), but also sustainability, environmental impacts, accessibility, aesthetics, circular economy and local economy preservation.
PROMOTE: Process Analysis, Observations and Modelling – Integrated Solutions for Cleaner Air for Delhi
Over four years, PROMOTE aims to reduce uncertainties in air quality prediction and forecasting for Delhi by undertaking process orientated observational and modelling analyses, and to derive the most effective mitigation solutions for reducing air pollution over the urban and surrounding region. PROMOTE brings together a cross-disciplinary team of leading researchers from India and the UK to deliver the project aims.
RECIRCULATE: Driving Eco-Innovation in Africa
This project will deliver innovative solutions to pressing problems with water use and safety. RECIRCULATE will ‘join up’ the different ways in which water sustains communities, from sewage disposal to energy generation and water used in food production.
ACTUATE: Accelerating the Adoption of the Circular Sanitation Demonstration Systems for Improved Health Outcomes
Supplying clean, secure and sustainable supplies of water, food and energy, while managing waste and optimising circular economies, is still an aspiration rather a policy-in-operation in Sub-Saharan Africa. ACTUATE will encourage the adoption of the anaerobic digester technology and circular economy by showcasing the benefits through co-delivery of community-based demonstration systems in Ghana and Nigeria.
AIRPRO: An Integrated Study of Air Pollution Processes in Beijing
The AIRPRO project aims to improve public understanding of the science and impacts of urban air pollution, support Chinese collaborators in their roles as influencers of policy and practice in Beijing and China, and translate AIRPRO science to megacities in a development context.
Seafood Age
SEAFOOD-AGE tackles a common social and economic challenge in the Atlantic Area (AA): an ageing population. Healthy ageing requires a healthy diet, and seafood products provide essential nutrients not always accessible to older adults. The project will exploit the maritime dimension of the AA regions and will adopt circular economy concepts to generate ready-to-eat seafood for healthy ageing, produce novel eco-packaging and develop a smart label for better quality, safety and minimum food waste.
GREAT: Gridding Equitable Urban Futures in Areas of Transition in Cali, Colombia and Havana, Cuba
Led by Lancaster University, an international interdisciplinary team of researchers in the UK, Colombia and Cuba will seek to transform our understanding of the relationship between off-grid infrastructures and the dynamics of growth and change of informal settlements in areas of transition. Working closely with communities from two informal settlements, this three-year UKRI-GCRF project will contribute to ‘gridding’ equitable urban futures in Cali, Colombia and Havana, Cuba.
